What was your initial definition of DE (the one posted in the classroom)?
DE is achieved when the instructor is not physically lecturing in front of students, and the students are learning the information on their own time and at the location of their choosing.
How has your understanding of DE changed after the first two weeks of class?
Upon reading about the history of DE, I was actually surprised that DE started in the 1800s, but did not get recognized in the education field until 1960’s. I also learned a lot about how DE evolved over the years and the different populations it serves in different countries. In addition, the media used to conduct DE and how it’s also evolving. I actually think US is behind on offering DE when compared to other developed counties, such as the UK. I am really curious to learn about DE as the class goes on.
What is your view of yourself as a learner? As an online learner? How prepared are you for online learning? Take the preparedness test and let us know how you did: http://www.adprima.com/dears.htm
After taking the test, I got a score of 67, which tells me that I should no issues with DE courses.
I view myself as a self-starter and I thrive in learning a subject that interests me greatly. I have never had an issue during both of my traditional undergraduate and graduate career. However, taking classes at UMUC and through its online learning format, I found myself able to keep up but do find myself behind sometimes. With traditional classes, you have a set time where you must go to the class, however, with online classes, it’s easier to slack off during the week days because I have already worked an entire day, and it’s hard to find motivations to keep going. But I am able to balance my time so far and do a good job on assignments.
How has your view of the MDE changed?
It has not changed yet since I am in my first class, which is an introduction course. I really do enjoy learning the history of DE and excited to see where this course may take me. But I am very set on earning my certificate first instead jumping straight into the MDE program.
During Week 1, you were meant to review the OMDE601 Library Guide (http://libguides.umuc.edu/mde). In what ways were you able to use this guide for your first assignment? How do you foresee using the guide in the future?
By using the library guide, I was able to know that there is a special area in the library that’s dedicated for the MDE program and where I can look for additional sources if needed. This is very helpful because a lot time could be wasted by just trying to narrow down which source is useful and provide research worthy materials. I did not use the library service for my first assignment because I was able to find all the information I needed in the course reading materials. But I am sure I will be using the library service and the MDE portion heavily for the second and the third assignment.
